Mystery of the Christmas Star

Journey back 2,000 years to Bethlehem as we seek to discover a scientific explanation for the star the wise men followed to find the baby Jesus. We’ll investigate possible dates for the birth of Christ and look at recorded sightings of significant astronomical events during this time frame. We’ll see which of these signs in the sky could have been remarkable enough to cause the wise men to travel across the desert from Babylon to Bethlehem just to see a newborn king. Night Catch

The Mayborn Science Theater’s new in-house full-dome production, “Night Catch,” is based on the children’s book written by Brenda Ehrmantraut and illustrated by Vicki Wehrman. “Night Catch” is aimed at military families and relays how special the North Star can be when you and your deployed loved one are on different sides of the world. In this story, a soldier is deployed overseas and enlists the help of the North Star for a nightly game of catch with his son who is home stateside. It’s a tale of two hearts and the one star that keeps them together.

"Many military families know the difficulty that comes along with having a loved one stationed or deployed away from home and how hard it can be to explain the separation to a small child,” said Fred Chavez, Mayborn Science Theater director. “Our new show, ‘Night Catch,’ shares the idea no matter where you are in the world, we all see the same night sky and the same stars. And something as simple as that can be enough to help one another make it through the time apart."

One World One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure

This planetarium show follows Sesame Street's Big Bird and Elmo as they explore the night sky with Hu Hu Zhu, a Muppet from Zhima Jie, the Chinese co-production of Sesame Street. Together, they take an imaginary trip from Sesame Street to the moon, where they discover how different it is from Earth.

"One World, One Sky" is a brilliant spectacle of light and color as the furry friends watch the stars twinkle over Sesame Street. Children attending the show can interact as they watch, drawing constellations and counting the time it takes the sun to set. The show aims to nurture a child's natural sense of wonder about the night sky.

Secret of the Cardboard Rocket

Two Small Pieces of Glass

While attending a local star party, two teenage students learn how the telescope has helped us understand our place in space and how telescopes continue to expand our understanding of the Universe. Their conversation with a local female astronomer enlightens them on the history of the telescope and the discoveries these wonderful tools have made. The students see how telescopes work and how the largest observatories in the world use these instruments to explore the mysteries of the universe.

While looking through the astronomer’s telescope, the students, along with the planetarium audience, explore the Galilean Moons, Saturn’s rings, and spiral structure of galaxies. During their conversation with the astronomer, they also learn about the discoveries of Galileo, Huygens, Newton, Hubble and many others.

In case you haven’t heard, the Moon is trending again… and in a big way. Like in the glory days of the 1960s and 1970s, our big white space neighbor is enjoying the attention of lunar explorers. Only this time, they’re going back to the moon for good.

The show opens with the first era of space exploration in the late 1960s and early 1970s. We see what that era of landers and orbiters taught us about our nearest neighbor including the discovery of the Moon’s origin, composition, structure and the accessibility of raw materials on its surface.

Cowboy Astronomer New!

From way out West comes a unique planetarium show! The basic premise of The Cowboy Astronomer is simple: we’re in the Western outdoors, listening to star legends and cowboy tales around the campfire. Our cowboy astronomer gives us his perspective on the night sky and the things he’s found out over a lifetime of stargazing. He talks about star colors and temperatures; we find the Andromeda Galaxy by hitting a first-base foul out of the park of the Great Baseball Diamond in the Sky; we learn about young stars and supernovae and what various cultures called the Pleiades; we hear two Native American star tales; see the Anasazi pictographs of the 1054 supernova, and Sirius rising over Wyoming’s Medicine Wheel. The show ends in a thoughtful, philosophical manner, as our cowboy muses about the constellation where he wants to head when he departs this Earth.

Rusty Rocket's Last Blast New!

After decades of teaching the basics of rocket physics, Rusty Rocket has decided this will be his last blast, and he already has plans for how he will spend his free time. Solar Quest

"Solar Quest" is a full dome planetarium short feature that demonstrates how the Sun and Earth are interconnected and that we are "Living with a Star".

High quality animations display solar phenomena such as fusion and light energy as well as solar surface features and events. Granules, solar flares and coronal mass ejections are highlighted.

The show discusses the impacts of space weather and how the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field protects all life on Earth.

"Solar Quest" features the role of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and how scientists are using it as a way to help identify and predict sever space weather. Actual videos of the Sun from SDO are used where the audience can actually see the large amount of energy being released.

"Solar Quest" was produced by the Buhl Planetarium as a support program for Carnegie Science Center’s "Science on the Road" school assembly program of the same name. It can be used as a supplement to any live presentations about the Sun.

Season of Light explores the reasons humans are so fascinated with lighting up our lives during the December holiday season. It's an exploration of the astronomical meanings behind seasonal traditions, including the "Star over Bethlehem".

This presentation traces the history and development of many of the world's most endearing holiday customs, all of which involve lighting up the winter season — from the burning Yule log, sparkling Christmas tree lights and candles in windows, to the lighting of luminarias in the American Southwest and the traditional ritual of the Hanukkah Menorah.

Laser Metallica

Laser Metallica is a visual interpretation of this pioneer ensemble in the field of what would become known as heavy metal. Featured works include the title track from the album "Master of Puppets," "Fuel," "One" and "Unforgiven." Laser Metallica finishes off with several tracks from the band's controversial “Black” album, including "Nothing Else Matters," "Sad But True" and "Enter Sandman."

Every month our in-house astronomers preview the next month's night sky, and present a multimedia tour of everything visible in the night sky during the following month - using our sophisticated Konica-Minolta Infinium Gamma II Star Projector, Omniscan Laser Light System, and a PowerPoint presentation. Northern and southern hemispheres are covered.
This is the best way to get a full classic planetarium experience - just you, Warren and the night sky.
Free telescole viewing, weather permitting.
